Important Tips

  • All documents must be officially translated if not in English or the local language
  • Keep both physical and digital copies of all documents
  • Start gathering documents at least 3–4 months before deadline
  • Check specific university requirements as they may vary
  • Apostille or notarization may be required for some documents

Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)

A blocked account is required by several European countries (especially Germany) to prove you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses during your studies. You deposit a fixed amount and can only withdraw a set monthly amount.

Germany: ~€11,904/year (€992/month) as of 2025. Required for student visa.
Austria: ~€12,000/year proof of financial means.
Denmark/Sweden/Finland: Bank statement showing sufficient funds (varies).

Popular Blocked Account Providers

  • Expatrio — Most popular for Germany, fast online setup (expatrio.com)
  • Fintiba — German blocked account with integrated health insurance (fintiba.com)
  • Deutsche Bank — Traditional bank option, slower process
  • Coracle (formerly Kotak) — For Indian students going to Germany

Steps to Open

  • Register on provider website with passport details
  • Upload required documents (passport, admission letter)
  • Transfer the required amount via international wire transfer
  • Receive confirmation letter for your visa application
  • After arriving, activate monthly withdrawals

Motivation Letter / Statement of Purpose

A motivation letter is one of the most important parts of your application. It explains who you are, why you chose this program, and what you plan to achieve.

Structure (1–2 pages)

  • Opening: Hook the reader — mention the program and university by name
  • Academic Background: Your education, relevant coursework, achievements
  • Why This Program: Specific courses, professors, research areas that attract you
  • Why This University/Country: What makes this institution unique for your goals
  • Career Goals: How this degree fits your professional plans
  • Closing: Summarize your enthusiasm and readiness
Top Tips: Be specific (don't say "your university is prestigious" — say what exactly attracts you). Keep it under 750 words. Proofread multiple times. Customize for each application — generic letters get rejected.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Copying templates without personalizing
  • Focusing only on personal story without connecting to the program
  • Being too general — "I've always been passionate about..." without evidence
  • Grammatical errors and typos
  • Exceeding recommended length

Sponsor's Salary Certificate

If a parent or guardian is sponsoring your studies, embassies require proof of their income and financial capability. Here's what you need:

Required Documents from Sponsor

  • Salary Certificate: Official letter from employer stating position, salary, and tenure
  • Bank Statements: Last 3–6 months showing regular income and sufficient balance
  • Sponsorship Letter: Signed affidavit confirming financial responsibility
  • Tax Returns: Last 1–2 years (ITR or equivalent)
  • Employment Contract: Some embassies request this additionally
If Sponsor is Self-Employed: Provide trade license/business registration, company bank statements, audited financial statements, and tax returns instead of salary certificate.

Tips

  • The salary certificate must be on company letterhead with stamp and signature
  • Bank balance should ideally cover full year tuition + living costs
  • All documents should be in English or officially translated
  • Some countries (Germany) prefer blocked account over sponsor proof
